Micah and friend Lolo pose by the chicken's and ducks as Erika's mom and neighbour Juliana look on. We weren't sure why but Erika and Lolo's mom spread chicken food on the ground just before I took this shot....maybe she figured the boys wouldn't be interesting enough? We enjoyed our visit with them and Erika's mom fed us some good homemade chicken soup and tortillas made on the fire. (We have had this experience a few times here...eating a chicken while its relatives look on or walk under our feet...as I always say "only in Guatemala!")

We visited Erika and Marisol when we went to Chiquimulilla the other day. Here they are with Siana and their very homely baby parrot. Siana is looking a bit pink because she is not used to the coastal heat anymore. Friends and Family from Canada have enabled Marisol and Erika to continue their schooling through providing funds and they are in their last year of high school here.

Here we all are ('cept Joe who is photograher) at the base of the cone of Pacaya . Behind us is rivers of hardened lava and in the foreground the local volcano dog which Siana befriended (of course!). The pictures following this one are a mishmash of our journey to the top. At first there is just forest and some strenuous hiking (or horseback riding) and then there is a clearing, some cows and the cinder and lava sand covered cone with hardened rivers of lava from vents on the volcano that have opened in the last year. It has changed drastically since we first climbed it and a huge valley that was there before is filled with hardened lava. Impressive....

Micah brought some hotdogs up the volcano and roasted them over a hotspot in the hardened lava. There was no red lava in this spot but the rocks were very white and Joe said you could really smell the sulfur.

Joe and the others went fairly close to this lava flow but Siana came back when her runners started to melt....her feet were so hot she took her shoes and socks off as soon as she got to the grass where Lauren and I were waiting.

Micah, Lauren, our friend from Canada and Hugo our friend from Guatemala , on a great heap of lava at the base of Pacaya's cone. There are great rivers of lava like this one all around Pacaya. It is very impressive to see. We climbed the volcanoe the 10 of March, 2007.

We must be getting lazy...we rented horses to take us up most of the way up the active volcano Pacaya. Here is Hugo (with cookie in mouth) Micah, myself, Siana behind me,Lauren ( Canadian girl) and Sabra at the tail end. The horse owners are the other people in the picture. I climbed a good way, puffing and panting and then accepted Joe's horse for a while.

Erika and Chepe are our friends from the coast who we treated at Macdonalds when they came to visit. This would be a very rare occurance for these two kids. Here they are sitting in the Macdonalds garden in Antigua (yes the Macdonalds has a garden and fountain there!) Erika and Chepe are looking a little tired from all the walking we made them do around Antigua.

Andromeda, Sabra's mount, is giving her quite a ride at La Ronda, in Antigua. She is not afraid of these jumps...but sometimes I am praying as she is going over. She has jumped to the height of one meter.

Joe dressed as the Ocean Fairy..actually he is getting wacked by a wave here...I think he survived because he is standing beside me now. The waves in the Pacific are usually really strong on the coast of Guatemala. Mike and Joe enjoy seeing if they can get sand and salt water up their noses and other places...I prefer to watch and smile. Sabra took all the "action wave" pictures.

This picture is really AMAZING once we explain it. We came home one night to find that Siana's knitting that she had left out had been used by the cats to make their own form of "craft" using the ball of wool and the bottom of our couch and coffee table. AND THIS IS ONLY PART of what they did. It took Sabra and Siana a bit of time to undo it all..and guess what? They left the newly rolled balls of wool out....the next day the girls were "unweaving" again...much to their dismay. It really was such complicated work that it is a bit hard to believe that the cats did it by themselves...but they did!

This is our sweet Siana with her cat Mico (Spanish for little monkey) also known as Mish and he is NOT a sweety. His idea of affection is sinking his fangs into flesh. Siana loves him never the less... after all he had a difficult childhood.

Our dog Blue looks a little "blue" in this picture because Sabra and Siana dressed him as a clown one day. He is pretty cute though!

Sabra is just finishing an "obstacle course" on her horse. The horse she is on is a young one and was giving Sabra a little grief that day because he was not used to being in an open field. However Sabra was not thrown from her horse , as was one of her classmates who had" close contact" with the grass during this lesson.

Sabra is in her riding class at Antigua in this picture. The horse she is riding is not her "pet" but since I am putting all the pictures on this site I guess I can have fun putting any picture with an animal in it here.
Sabra really enjoys riding and she is doing very well...she has great "form" when she is on the back of a horse.

This is our dog "Blue". We got him from "Aware"(An animal shelter here in Guatemala when he was a puppy)He is afraid of our broom,my sister, SAbra, says "Mr.Broom!!" and he goes running away.(We only do this when he is bad)HE is not very smart but he is loving.
He also has a big deep scary bark which does not go with his personality. By Siana

"Hearts in Action" compound in Peten. We all loved on him a lot when we were up there. Hearts in Action is a mission that trains up pastors and youth leaders of Guatemala and they do lots of other stuff too.
